Test and Measurement Engineer - Quantum Sensing
Join a supportive, collaborative team where curiosity and varied experiences are celebrated, and where your voice matters from day one.
Location: Darlington, NSW with flexible working conditions
Security requirements: Due to work with the Australian Defence Force, only Australian citizens can be considered for this role.
Deteqt is an early-stage, venture-backed startup building quantum sensors for magnetic-field-aware intelligence. Our patented diamond-on-chip technology enables precision magnetic sensing in the world’s most challenging and enable navigation without GPS, rapid mapping of underground anomalies or sensing weak signals where GPS fails, signals degrade, and conventional sensors fall short. We’re engineering real-world quantum systems for defence, mining, and autonomous navigation, with key partnerships and momentum behind us.
Position Overview
Deteqt is seeking a skilled and hands-on Test and Measurement Engineer – Quantum Sensing to support the development and characterisation of our next-generation quantum sensing technology. This role is central to validating sensor performance and translating cutting-edge quantum research into robust, field-ready systems.
You will design and implement characterisation protocols, lead feasibility studies and pilot deployments, contribute to R&D milestones, and help bridge the gap between experimental setups and product-ready hardware. Working as part of the engineering team and closely with product leads and external partners, you’ll play a key role in delivering our first-generation demonstrator and shaping the sensor performance roadmap for future product releases.
You will also be the delivery lead for existing and future R&D partnerships with major partners and customers. This requires a demonstrated ability in proactive project management, milestone tracking, reporting, and technical delivery. In addition to your test and measurement expertise, you will bring versatility across disciplines relevant to DeteQt’s core technologies — including photonics, electronics, materials, CMOS, and FPGA.
About Deteqt
Deteqt builds quantum sensors for magnetic-field-aware intelligence. Our diamond-on-chip magnetometers unlock precision magnetic sensing in environments where conventional tools fall short—underwater, underground, and in GPS-denied or electromagnetically contested domains.
As an early-stage startup with significant momentum, Deteqt is translating cutting-edge quantum science into practical, scalable technology. Our sensors are engineered for real-world deployment: compact, solid-state, and built for integration with autonomous systems across land, sea, and subsea.
By aligning with the global semiconductor ecosystem and partnering with global sector partners, we’re bringing laboratory-grade precision to the tactical edge—enabling next-generation capabilities in navigation, exploration, and subsurface intelligence.
Your Key Responsibilities
Characterisation and Testing: Design and implement experimental protocols to evaluate sensor performance, both in lab and real-world environments.
Equipment and Process Setup: Establish and maintain equipment, facilities, and tools for advanced sensor testing.
Data Analysis and Optimisation: Use data analysis and control software to optimise sensing performance, including noise characterisation and multimodal signal processing.
Project Delivery: Contribute to or lead technical delivery of R&D projects by setting and meeting milestones aligned with broader product goals.
Subsystem Integration: Collaborate with engineering leads to translate test systems into manufacturable designs, with attention to integration of optical, chip-level, and electronic subsystems.
Feasibility and Pilot Studies: Lead the design, execution, and evaluation of feasibility studies and pilot deployments, including technical planning, experimental design, stakeholder coordination, and post-study analysis to inform product development and customer integration pathways.
Customer Engagement: Interface with customers throughout the product lifecycle to ensure design usability and optimise field performance.
Documentation and Quality: Maintain robust documentation of experiments, analysis, and test results; help establish quality assurance practices.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with physics, systems, and software teams to support delivery, problem-solving, and innovation.
Mentorship and Knowledge Sharing: Promote best practices and mentor team members and contribute to a culture of technical excellence.
Communication: Prepare clear reports and communicate results to internal stakeholders and external partners, including non-technical audiences.
Your Qualifications
Education:
Degree (Bachelor’s or PhD) in Engineering, Physics or a related field.
Experience:
8+ years of relevant experience in commercial and industry driven research and development with strong milestone driven, project management disciplines.
Experience in quantum sensing system test and measurement, especially at the prototype stage.
Required skills and experience:
Proven experience in test and measurement roles within sensing, photonics, or quantum technology domains.
Strong background in experimental design, instrumentation, and data analysis.
Familiarity with signal processing and control systems.
Sufficient theoretical expertise to model laboratory and field operating environments and develop protocols to maximise signal-to-noise ratio.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including with non-technical stakeholders.
Strong collaborator with a practical, solution-oriented mindset.
Australian citizenship required (due to work with the Australian Defence Force).
Desirable skills and experience:
Optical and photonics prototyping and development skills.
Magnetometer test and measurement.
Formal project management training and demonstrated effectiveness.
Novel and inventive design experience that has led to significant impact in final product or prototype performance.
What does success in this role look like?
Contribution to the delivery of our first-generation portable quantum magnetometer and the protocols for calibration and testing in future releases.
Efficient, productive, and transparent project delivery providing an outstanding customer experience for the initial major partner you will be project delivery lead for, and future partners as we grow.
Significant contribution to Deteqt’s technology roadmap, including identifying technical risks, sequencing future product capabilities, and informing our go-to-market strategy.
Strong foundations laid for test and measurement of future product generations, through well-structured system design, documentation, and component validation.
Trusted leadership within the team, with a growing role in mentoring, partner collaboration, and shaping engineering culture at Deteqt.
